Comparing SaaS website builders and WordPress.org
If you’ve been thinking about creating a website, you’ve probable asked yourself…
“Where should I build my website?”
With so many options out there it’s easy to feel stuck before you even begin. You might be wondering which is the right choice, or worrying about making a decision you’ll regret later.
Add the “tech talk” and it can feel overwhelming just to get started. I want you to know that you are not alone.
This is one of the most common questions I get and the truth is…it is not about choosing the best platform. It’s about choosing the right foundation for you and your business.
So I have put together this simple post to walk you through:
- What a Saas platform actually is
- What is WordPress.com verses WordPress.org
- The pros and cons of SaaS and WordPress.org
- And how to decide what is right for you
Let’s get started!
What is “SaaS”?
Before we compare, let’s simplify the terminology.
A SaaS (Software as a Service) website platform is one where everything is included in one place:
- Your website is hosted for you (no separate plan needed)
- You access it through your browser
- You pay a monthly or annual subscription
- Updates, security, and maintenance are handled for you
Examples of SaaS include:
- ShowIt
- Squarespace
- Wix
- WordPress.com
What is WordPress?
This is where it can get confusing
There are two WordPress platforms…WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Below is a summary, but you can learn more about each in my blog post “WordPress.com or WordPress.org?” where I share more details about each WordPress platform.
WordPress.com = SaaS
- Hosted Platform
- Limited Control (depends on plan)
- Subscription-based
- Easier to start
WordPress.com = Convenience
WordPress.com = NOT SaaS
- Self-hosted
- Full ownership and control
- More flexibility
- Requires setup and maintenance
WordPress.org = Control + Growth
SaaS Platform
PROS
Simple and beginner-friendly: Everything is set up for you. The provider maintains hosting, updates and security.
All-in-one Solution: Design, hosting, and support are bundled together.
Faster to launch: You can often get a website up quickly using templates.
Less maintenance: No plugin updates, backups, or technical upkeep required.
CONS
Limited Flexibility: Your working within the platform’s rules. Custom features can be restricted and require upgrades to higher costing plans.
Monthly costs add up: You are always paying to keep your site live.
Platform dependency: You don’t fully “own” your website and switching or moving to a different platform can be difficult.
Limited scalability: As your business grows you can outgrow what the platform can provide.
WordPress.org
PROS
Full ownership and control: You own your website, your data and your hosting.
Unlimited flexibility: With themes and plugins you can create/build almost anything.
Scalable for growth: Your website can grow with your business. There are no platform limitations.
Cost-effective long term: While there are upfront costs, you’re not locked into high monthly fees.
CONS
Learn curve: There are more steps involved in getting setup.
Ongoing maintenance: You’re responsible for updates, backups, and security.
More decisions to make: Where to host, which theme, which plugins. With increased ownership and flexibility comes more choices.
Wrap Up
So which is the right choice?
This is my honest answer…if you want simple and quick then a SaaS may be good starting point and if you want control, growth, and long-term flexibility then WordPress.org is the better choice.
Neither is “wrong”…it depends on where you are in your journey and what you need.
If you need a website that truly reflects your brand and allows for future growth without additional financial investment then learning how to use WordPress is one of the most valuable skills you can have.
Yes, it may take a little more time upfront…but it will give you confidence, control, and ownership over your online presence. That is something no platform can take away from you.
Your website is not just a place online…it is the foundation of your business and your online office.
Choosing the right platform is about more than convenience. It’s about choosing what will support you not just today, but as your business grows.
If you are feeling stuck or unsure how to get started I can help you move forward with clarity and a lot less overwhelm.
I offer one-on-one consultations and coaching to help you make the right decision for your business.
You don’t have to figure it out alone. 💛
